Exercise
To learn how to use Zotero we will be working on a project description
from the Faculty of Education. The project title is
Gender Equality, Education and Poverty (GEEP),
and concerns women's rights and opportunities in Sudan and South Africa.
The project description contains lots of references to different kinds of literature, like
books, chapters in anthologies, articles in scholarly journals, United Nations (UN) reports, web resources etc.
The references are entered manually, and the task in this exercise is to replace them with
references saved in Zotero.
Saving references: Technically
If a website has Zotero support you will see an icon in the Firefox address bar. When
you click on this icon, the reference will be saved in your local Zotero database.

Cite while you write
The Zotero toolbar has seven button:
 | Insert citation |
 | Edit citation |
 | Insert bibliography |
 | Edit bibliography |
 | Refresh |
 | Set document preferences
(among them the citation style used in the bibliography) |
 | Remove field codes |
The bibliography: Citation styles
- Zotero has many built-in citation styles, among them APA (American Psychological Association),
Chicago and Harvard
- You choose the citation style for the document when you insert the first citation in the document
You can change the citation style any time by clicking the Set document preferences button on the toolbar
The bibliography: Language
- Zotero chooses the language set in Firefox for the bibliography
- To change language
- Enter about:config i the Firefox address bar
- Find the parameter called extensions.zotero.export.bibliographyLocale
- Change the value for the parameter to the language code you will use
- Examples of language codes: : nb-NO (Norwegian bokmål) en-US
(US English)
- Restart Firefox
Synchronising
- Your Zotero database can automatically synchronise (sync) its content against a master copy on the Internet
- Both references and full text documents can sync
- Ensures safe backups and helps you share data between different computers
- Zotero offers for free 100 MB storage space for syncing
- Zotero is a social networking website where you can share your synced library with others
- Zotero can sync against any server supporting the WebDAV protocol

Troubleshooting
Problem: «I cannot see the Zotero toolbar in Microsoft Word»
- Close Microsoft Word
- In Firefox: Choose Tools → Add-ons in the Firefox menu. There should be two Zotero add-ons in
the list. One should be Zotero, and the second one should be Zotero WinWord Integration.
If the Microsoft Word integration is there, you should click on it, choose Options,
Reinstall Word Components and click OK. Close the Add-ons window and
open Microsoft Word. The Add-on toolbar should be there.
- If you cannot find the Zotero WinWord Integration in the Firefox add-on list, you must reinstall
it from the Zotero website.
If you have Microsoft Word 2010, ant the steps above don't help, try this:
- Close Microsoft Word
- Copy the file Zotero.dot in the folder
C:\Users\username\Firefox\firefox\extensions\zoteroWinWordIntegration@zotero.org\install
(replace username with your username at HiOA)
- Paste the file into the Microsoft Word startup folder, which is Libraries\Documents at HiOA
- Restart Microsoft Word
